Động từ tobe là một trong những nền tảng ngữ pháp quan trọng nhất trong tiếng Anh. Từ lớp 6 đến lớp 9, học sinh thường xuyên gặp các dạng bài như chia am/is/are, was/were, viết câu phủ định, đặt câu hỏi, chọn đáp án đúng hoặc hoàn thành câu với dạng đúng của động từ tobe.

Đây cũng là phần kiến thức xuất hiện trong nhiều dạng bài ôn thi vào lớp 10 và các bài kiểm tra tiếng Anh ở bậc THPT.

Tuy nhiên, nhiều học sinh vẫn nhầm lẫn hoặc không biết sau to be là gì. Một số bạn thuộc công thức nhưng khi làm bài lại sai vì chưa phân biệt được chủ ngữ số ít – số nhiều, thì hiện tại – quá khứ, hoặc vai trò của “be” trong câu.

Tổng quan về động từ tobe trong chương trình lớp 6–9 và các kỳ thi

Trước khi làm bài tập động từ tobe, học sinh cần hiểu rõ bản chất của điểm ngữ pháp này. Động từ tobe là nhóm động từ gồm các dạng như am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being.

Trong câu, tobe có thể đóng vai trò là:

• Động từ chính để diễn tả trạng thái, đặc điểm, nghề nghiệp, vị trí hoặc
• Trợ động từ trong các thì tiếp diễn và câu bị động.

Ở thì hiện tại đơn, động từ tobe có 3 dạng chính: am, is, are. Trong đó:

• am đi với I
• is đi với chủ ngữ số ít như he, she, it, my father
• are đi với you, we, they và danh từ số nhiều.

Ở thì quá khứ đơn, tobe có 2 dạng là was và were. Was đi với I, he, she, it và danh từ số ít; were đi với you, we, they và danh từ số nhiều. Vì vậy, các dạng bài tập thì quá khứ đơn với động từ tobe thường yêu cầu học sinh xác định thời gian trong câu, sau đó chọn đúng was hoặc were.

Một câu hỏi khác học sinh thường gặp là “sau to be là gì?” hoặc “to be + gì?”. Sau tobe có thể là:

• Tính từ: She is happy.
• Danh từ/cụm danh từ: He is a doctor.
• Cụm giới từ: They are at school.
• V-ing: She is reading a book.
• V3/ed: The door is closed.
• To V trong một số cấu trúc nhất định: My goal is to improve my English.
